Golf: Celtics finish 10th at state golf

PORT ST. LUCIE -- The St. John Neumann High girls golf team was determined to play better on the second day of the Class A state tournament. The Celtics did and had the highest finish of the four area teams at the boys and girls tournaments.

Neumann shot 357 Wednesday, 22 strokes better than Tuesday, for 10th place. All five golfers had better scores the second day.

"I thought it was very important that we bounce back and I think we did," Celtics coach Greg Donahue said. "We talked about it at dinner (Tuesday) night, that we wanted to come back and play a little better.

I'm pleased with our score and that we jumped a few teams."

St. John Neumann freshman Courtney Figueroa fin ished tied for eighth with 79-78-157.

"I think I could have played a little better," Figueroa said. "I missed some putts at the end that I should have had and I had a couple bad drives. Overall, I think that I played pretty well. I would have liked to have done better, but there's nothing that I can do about it now."

Boca Raton-St. Andrew's shot 290 in the second round and won the tournament for the second year in a row with a score of 595.

Morgan Pressel, a 15-year-old sophomore who made the cut at the 2003 U.S. Women's Open, had a two-day total of 138 to claim the individual championship.

The Gulf Coast High School's boys golf team was hoping to rebound after a tough first day at the Class 2A state golf tournament at the PGA Golf Club.

The Sharks, who trailed by 23 strokes after the first round, shot 326 on Wednesday. They finished the two- day tournament with a combined score of 644 and finished in 12th place.

"I didn't think that we played well," Gulf Coast coach Jim Ragusa said. "We got into trouble and we tried to overcompensate on holes. But we have no excuses, we just didn't play well.

"I thought that, with the wind not being as bad, we would have played a little better, but we didn't."

Orlando-Olympia shot 289 on Wednesday to claim the Class 2A team championship with a total of 585.

The Titans trailed Stuart- Martin County by a stroke after the first round, but Martin County shot 300 and finished with 595.

Jacksonville-Bartram Trail's Toby Ragland won the Class 2A individual title with a two-day total of 138.

The Sharks' top individual was Jeff Glase (77-78-155), the lone Gulf Coast golfer to shoot under 80 both days.

In the Class 2A girls tournament, Barron Collier finished 12th and Gulf Coast finished 15th.

All of Barron Collier's golfers shot higher Wednesday than they did Tuesday.

The Cougars finished with a two-day total of 717. Their top player was Brittany Parisi (81-84-165).

"Most of my girls aren't used to playing 36 holes," said Cougars coach Charlie Hughes, who is not returning next year. "But it's finished, and it's a nice way to go out."

Gulf Coast shot 14 strokes better Wednesday, finishing with 382. Four of the five Sharks improved their scores from Tuesday.

Samantha Schulz (80-85-165) led Gulf Coast, which was making its first appearance.

"They could have played better, but we're happy to be here," Sharks coach Ana Gilliam said. "Now we know what we need to do to try and compete against some of the bigger schools that come here every year."

Martin County's girls won the Class 2A title with a 586, 63 strokes better than second-place Fort Lauderdale- St. Thomas Aquinas. Seminole's Brittany Lincicome shot 140 to win the individual championship.
