Each year, the 23 other players in the field get a gift from the Normans. This year, the players receive a Beamer Videophone, valued anywhere from $500 to $600.
The videophone comes in a set of two, the other to give to whoever else a person would call.
The phone line plugs into the back.
"It hooks up like an answering machine," said Lisa Buerger, a marketing representative for Vialta, the company which makes the videophone and has an expo booth at the Shootout at Tiburn Golf Club. "There are no monthly fees or adjusted fees."
The videophone starts up after someone picks up the phone to make a call. And there are controls on the sides to adjust views, including use of a picture-in-picture to see the caller and who's being called, provided they also have a videophone. There also is a way to shut off the video for privacy. When the phone hangs up, the monitor turns off.
Vialta launched the first version of the videophone in August of 2002 and recently launched a different version that allows a connection to a television set.
