Editorial: Scouting for food

Local postal workers wrote the book on food drives. Each spring they ask customers to set nonperishable food out by the mail box. Carriers scoop it up and deliver it to food banks.

Neat, simple and effective.

Cub and Boy Scouts will borrow a page from that book on Saturday, when they distribute shopping bags to doorsteps across Collier County. The bags will be empty. Scouts eager to "do a good turn" ask you to do likewise and put the bags -- with donated non-perishables inside -- back on those doorsteps next Saturday morning, Nov. 22. Scouts will come back around to pick them up and share with the needy.

Those who do not get an empty bag and still would like to help can bring food to Lowe's home improvement store across from Hollywood 20 in North Naples that same morning, Nov. 22.

The Scouts get a special salute for helping a great cause in a clever way that lets the community pitch in. Job well done by tomorrow's leaders.
