Get Out: Nov. 14, 2003

Fun things to do on and around Marco Nov. 14-23.

Today

Double-feature night

Life begins after midnight for those 17 and older tonight: Jetset Surf Shop and Marco Movies join forces for a first-time double-feature night. The slated features are the 2003 surfer film "Circle One," starring ocean athlete Kelly Slater, and "Campaign," the 1978 pre-"Airplane" spoof of a ruthless PTA mom running for the city council. Think "Election," perhaps, for grown-ups? Tickets are $5 (about 40 already have been sold, according to the folks at Jetset) and are available at Jetset, 674 Bald Eagle Drive.

Whether there's 20 or 80 people in the audience, the shows will go on! Call 394-5544 for more information.

Sunday

Bucs-Packers tailgate party

For those Cinderellas who turn into pumpkins after midnight, try the Battle on the Bay fund-raiser football game Sunday, Nov. 16. The tailgate party will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. at San Marco Catholic Church, with a screening of the game between the Green Bay Packers versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, food and prizes. Most importantly, all proceeds from the event will benefit Marco Island Charter School. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children. They can be purchased at the door or reserved by calling 389-1041 or 389-4818.

Flicks

At the movies

Variety is the moviegoing spice of life this week and next at Marco Movies.

Techno-gimmick freaks can still catch the much-vaunted "The Matrix Revolutions" with its wall-to-wall barrage of visuals, while cartoon fans are catered to in the "Roger Rabbit" wannabe, "Looney Tunes: Back In Action."

Serious movie buffs will be tempted by the Clint Eastwood-directed "Mystic River," a murder mystery that already has generated Oscar talk for at least one actor, Sean Penn.

Unabashed action comes courtesy of the fourth film on offer at Marco Movies, Russell Crowe's maritime adventure, "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," which traces a voyage of discovery against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars.

For dinner

In the mood for barbecue

There's wise and otherwise, like other characters you might meet in bars, but this week lets just talk about bar as in barbecue -- slow-smoked and fall-from-the bone tender and juicy like the kind served at Porky's Last Stand on Marco Island.

I enjoy eating at Porky's, of course for its signature fare, but also because it's a great place to bring kids. Here, after coloring the tots' menu palls and hunger pangs set in, the little carnivores can be diverted with a trip to the bountiful and excellent (really) salad bar.

Porky's Last Stand is at 701 Bald Eagle Drive. Phone is 394-8727. Takeout and catering are available. Most major credit cards are accepted. Open for lunch and dinner, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Showtime

Dinner and music

Blu Fusion continues its Sunday dinner series on Nov. 23 with Joe Marino and his band, All the King's Men. Marino and all the Men will be covering tunes from rock's heyday: Elvis and Buddy Holly; Jerry Lee Lewis and Richie Valens, other dead singers, and more. Strap on your blue suede shoes and come prepared to cut a rug. The show starts at 6:30, and there is no cover, but a dinner purchase is required.
