Editorial: Golden Gate water

Good news. Tests on drinking water wells in Golden Gate are looking good. There are fewer signs of coliform (filth) -- a precursor of the more serious fecal coliform (animal and human waste) -- than were detected in tests this time last year.

Those results raised public health concerns that it might be time for more of that subdivision to be brought onto a central water and sewer system.

The results also raised concern about the costs of doing so, and the political fallout for at least one county commissioner, Golden Gate's Tom Henning, if that were necessary.

Henning has more cause than most to applaud the new test results.

Still, no serious analysis is based on a single test -- whether the results show danger or safety. It is good the systematic testing will continue. It is good too that county Health Director Joan Colfer, who was brave to come forward with last year's bad news, is still on the job to make sure science is well represented in public policy.
