FGCU Basketball: Lady Eagles stumble

The FGCU Women's basketball team was able to come back from an early 19-point deficit and led by four with just over four minutes to play, but for the second straight game, turnovers spoiled the Eagles' hopes to get in the win column.

Northern Michigan's Tiffany Grubaugh had a career-high 34 points and four assists to lead the Wildcats to an 85-74 win over the Eagles in the final day of the Sleep Inn Classic in Saint Leo.

"We've gotten off to some bad starts and dug some major holes for ourselves," said coach Karl Smesko, whose team also fell toLake Superior State on Saturday.

"It was good to see us fight our way back, but we're not going to win many games when you put yourself in that kind of predicament."

The Eagles (0-2) were able to improve on the boards, outrebounding Northern Michigan (2-0), 33-28. Smesko praised center Robyn Swain's physical play inside, but missed opportunities late in the second half cost the Eagles.

"Our transition defense has been suspect so far and we're turning the ball over way too much to win," said Smesko.

FGCU will next host Puerto Rico Mayaquez in the team's home opener Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
