Franklin Templeton Shootout: Short takes

MEET THE WINNERS

Hank Kuehne, left, and Jeff Sluman, right, overcame a four-shot deficit to capture the 2003 Franklin Templeton Shootout. Kuehne and Sluman shot 11-under par Sunday in the scramble format and needed overtime to defeat the teams of Brad Faxon and Scott McCarron and Shaun Micheel and Chad Campbell. Kuehne comes from a golfing family. His sister, Kelli, is on the LPGA Tour and his brother, Trip, is also a professional. Trip claim to fame is that he was the runner-up to Tiger Woods at the 1994 U.S. Amateur. Hank, who is called Henry by his siblings, won the U.S. Amateur four years later in 1998. Ten years earlier, in 1988, Sluman won the PGA Championship at Oak Tree Golf Club. Sluman, a former Florida State standout, fired a final- round 65 for his first career victory. Kuehne was just 13 and in seventh grade at the time.

Tiger Woods fanned the fire over the illegal driver debate this year. All 24 players were asked if the PGA Tour should conduct driver testing at each stop?

"I don't have a problem with testing but this is an over-blown issue. If you tested all of the drivers you might only find a handful that are over the require limit. And they'll be over by just a fraction which isn't going to give anyone any significant amount of distance."

CLOSEST TO THE PIN

Hank Kuehne -- No. 18. Kuehne saved the best for last. On the second hole of a playoff, after hitting a 332-yard drive, the long-hitting Texan was just 113 yards away from the pin, which tucked on the back-right portion of the 18th green. Kuehne's sandwedge shot fly right over the flagstick, landed eight feet from the flag and spun back towards the hole. Kuehne rolled in the four- foot birdie putt to give Jeff Sluman and him the title.

INQUIRING MINDS

As a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, did you expect Bill Parcells to turn around the franchise so quick in Big D?

"My manager used to coach with Bill Parcells at Texas A&M and he told me that Parcells is a really good coach and the Cowboys were going to be better. Our expectations as Cowboys fans weren't to go 7-2 and be leading the division. I think if they win 10 games it will be a good season."

-- Lee Janzen, former Shootout champion.

POSTGAME PLANS

Jeff Sluman will serve as an assistant captain at the Presidents Cup in South Africa this week. Hank Kuehne will also be on the road; he will be playing in Japan.

"I have a pretty good idea of what the initial matches are going to be. I spent a night a couple of weeks ago with Jack (Nicklaus). We talked over matches and strategy and this like that. I've got a pretty good idea about that. I wish I was halfway there."

-- Jeff Sluman

"He's going 14 hours east and I'm going 14 hours west. I'm going to Tokyo. I'm playing the Dunlop Phoenix this week. I leave (Monday) morning and I get there Tuesday night."

-- Hank Kuehne
