Sea Scouts

Sea Scouts, a division of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women between 14 and 20, will have an organizational meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Naples Power Squadron's office, 297 Airport-Pulling Road. This is the first Sea Scout ship and troop in Naples, and the Naples Power Squadron is the sponsoring organization. The scouts will participate in seagoing adventures which will include sailing to the Dry Tortugas, scuba diving the Cayman Islands and whitewater rafting. Manners at Calusa Park Elementary

The third- and fourth-graders at Calusa Park Elementary School had a day of manners on Nov. 14. They learned table manners, place settings and the old-fashioned way of doing things. On Thursday, Nov. 20, they will put their skills to the test at the Ridgeway Grill. The restaurant is hosting the students for lunch where they will put their manners to good use.

Estero band fund-raiser

The Estero Band will have a Penny Harvest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 22 at Sunshine Ace Hardware, San Carlos Park; Publix Supermarkets, Pelican Landing, 24000 U.S. 41 S., Bonita Springs; and The Center of Bonita, 3306 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs. Give the students pennies to help keep the music alive.

Scholarship opportunities

The Southwest Florida Community Foundation awards scholarships worth $500 to $10,000 from 40 scholarship funds administered by the foundation. High school applicants may apply until Feb. 5, 2004, and post-high school participants have until May 3, 2004. Some of the scholarships are renewable and some are given just one time, but most require good academic standing and financial need.

Achievements and accolades

-- Sarah Anderson, a freshman at Gulf Coast High School, has been selected as a soprano for the 8-9 choir of the Florida All-State Chorus. Anderson is the first student from Gulf Coast to be selected to the All-State Chorus.

-- Ciara Young of Naples has been selected to participate in the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C.

Graduations

Ryan W. Senkarik, son of Bob and Donna Senkarik of Naples, graduated from Florida International University with a master's degree in physical therapy. Senkarik also completed the certified strength and conditioning specialist designation and certified conditioning specialist designation. While studying for his degree Senkarik was a part-time director of personal training at the FIU Fitness Center and was named personal trainer of the year twice. He is a 1997 graduate of Barron Collier High School.
