Hazmat crews called to Naples landfill

Hazardous material crews were called to the Naples landfill on Tuesday afternoon after a commercial dump truck picked up a container with a substance that caused a mist to form.

Eighty percent of the substance was identified as zirconium oxychloride, which can cause a mild skin irritation, according to Golden Gate fire spokesman Victor Hill. The rest is still being analyzed.

Zirconium oxychloride is used in leather processing, textile processing and cosmetics.

A Commercial Clean-Up truck went to the landfill with the substance around 2 p.m. It was discovered that the substance was reacting to plastic, he said. The substance will be sealed in a hazardous material container and removed from the landfill.

No one was hurt. No one had to be evacuated from the landfill or surrounding homes.
