Northbound lanes of U.S. 41 reopened Saturday

The northbound lanes of U.S. 41 in Bonita Springs reopened Saturday, giving motorists an unblocked U.S. 41 for the first time since workers severed a gas line Thursday afternoon.

U.S. 41 was closed in both directions from Bonita Beach Road to West Terry Street after workers trying to relocate utility lines accidentally cut a TECO People’s Gas line near the Imperial River Bridge at about 5 p.m. Thursday. The road, one of the main thoroughfares through town, remained closed until a quickly constructed temporary pipeline allowed the southbound lanes to open early Saturday morning.

The northbound lanes remained closed, though, until workers were able to position concrete barriers to protect the temporary pipeline. Those lanes were opened to traffic late Saturday afternoon.
