Youth: Naples Gators fall in conference final

The Naples Gators 115-pound youth football team saw its promising season come to an end Saturday in Hialeah.

Naples, playing in the Fed Ex Orange Bowl Youth Football League, fell to the Miami Gardens Chargers, 28-7, in the MXYFL conference championship. The team is made up of 11- to 13-year-olds.

Quinn Thornton scored the only touchdown for the Gators in the first half on a 59-yard run after taking the handoff from quarterback Daren Bailey. The Gators (8-3) led 7-0 at the half.

"They were a strong team," Jeff Zablo said of the Chargers. "We had them at the half but they were a bigger, stronger team and they wore us down in the second half. They were the better team today, but I'm proud of our kids for finishing as the runner-ups. Great accomplishment."

Miami Gardens moves on to the regional playoff in two weeks to decide who will play in the Orange Bowl Fed Ex Super Bowl at the Orange Bowl stadium in Miami on Dec. 13.
