Fort Myers man dies after truck flips on I-75

A 45-year-old Fort Myers man died when the truck he was in flipped over on Interstate 75 in Collier County on Tuesday afternoon, authorities say.

Broderick C. Belmer died in the crash, which happened around 3 p.m. in the northbound lanes at Mile Marker No. 104, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers say a 2000 Ford truck, which was towing a trailer, was heading north on I-75. The trailer fishtailed and the driver, 28-year-old Louis Thompson of Cape Coral lost control of the truck, reports say.

The truck went off the road and onto the east shoulder, flipping over and throwing Belmer and another man out of the truck. Two other men were also hurt. No one in the truck was wearing a seatbelt, reports say.

Thompson suffered serious injuries and was flown to Lee Memorial Hospital, troopers say.

Traffic heading north on the interstate was diverted onto Collier Boulevard, where drivers had to travel north to reach the Pine Ridge Road or Immokalee Road exit to continue north on the highway.
