Fort Myers man electrocuted at Naples construction site

A 27-year-old Fort Myers man was electrocuted Wednesday morning while working at a North Naples construction site, authorities say.

Jose Guadalupe-Sanchez died in the 8:15 a.m. accident at the intersection of Vanderbilt Beach Road and the uncompleted section of Livingston Road, Collier County sheriff's deputies say.

Reports give this account:

Guadalupe-Sanchez, who worked for Florida State Underground, was part of a crew setting cement pipe into the ground using a tractor-loader. There were power lines right above where the work was being done.

Guadalupe-Sanchez had just hooked up a piece of the cement pipe to the tractor bucket with a chain.

Osvaldo Popoca of Fort Myers, who was the foreman and the driver of the backhoe, moved the arm of the bucket toward a ditch where the pipe was to be placed. Guadalupe-Sanchez was holding onto the pipe so it would not swing.

The backhoe struck an electric pole, causing live wires to fall, electrocuting Guadalupe-Sanchez, who fell to the ground.

Workers tried to resuscitate Guadalupe-Sanchez, who was pronounced dead at Cleveland Clinic hospital.
