Kay Smith: St. Leo women to hold Christmas luncheon

BONITA SPRINGS -- Bonita Springs City Councilman Robert Wagner was the guest speaker at the Nov. 13 meeting of the Citizens Association of Bonita Beach (CABB). The councilman conducted swearing-in ceremonies for four directors of CABB who will serve three-year periods. They are:

Jan Wall, re-elected; David W. Ward, re-elected; Marjorie Ward, re-elected; and Ginny McIntosh, elected for the first time. The newly elected officers who will serve a one-year term are: President Marjorie F. Ward, Vice President David W. Ward, Secretary Betty Lou Myers and Treasurer Jan Wall.

After the ceremonies, Wagner talked about many things of great interest to the organization, such as the renourishment of Bonita Beach, the time sale for Beach Park North, which is currently under construction, as well as city matters.

CABB's next meeting will be on Thursday evening, Dec. 11. Details will follow. Questions may be directed to 992-5153.

Bonita Springs Utilities Inc. has teamed up with ACME Computer Services Inc. to provide personal computers to students who attend Bonita Springs Middle School. Fred Partin, executive director of the water company, said the utility company provided ACME Computers with seven used PCs, which ACME is refurbishing. School administrators give the computers to students whose families cannot afford to buy them.

"The PCs are older models that are no longer suitable for business applications, but they're perfect for student use for word processing and Web search," Partin said. "This is the second year we have partnered with ACME Computers in an effort that is a win-win for everyone."

In thanking ACME Computers, Bonita Springs Middle School teacher Joseph Cofield said: "You don't know how much good you have done for my students. Some had thought a computer was out of their reach, but now that they have them, they have started to think anything is possible. It made a real difference in the quality of their school work and even their attitude toward their life."

Last year, 15 BSU computers were given to students, and four of the utility's used PCs were donated to the Shelter for Abused Women in Collier County earlier this year. ACME Computers, which has been selling and repairing computers in Bonita Springs for eight years, has refurbished and donated more than 60 personal computers to schoolchildren and others in need.

"Being computer literate helps students do well in school," said Hank DeMent of ACME Computers. "Having a PC at home allows students to become proficient with the technology. That skill will help youngsters compete in later grades, in college and in their careers."
