Woman arrested for DUI after driving on runway

A 34-year-old woman who nearly clipped a few parked airplanes as she drove onto a runway at Naples Municipal Airport was arrested Tuesday night on a drunken-driving charge, police say.

Stephanie Jean Ziems of 2395 Washington Ave., East Naples, was arrested around 11:30 p.m. after she was driving erratically and without her car headlights, Naples police say.

Reports give this account: At 11 p.m., Naples Police were called to the airport by security guards who reported a blue Ford Focus driven by Ziems traveling out of control in a secured runway area at the general aviation terminal. The car had just missed hitting several parked planes.

Police saw the car driving without headlights.

"Upon activating the patrol vehicle's lights and sirens, Ziems still didn't stop right away," the police report says.

Ziems was stopped by police beside some airplane hangars just east of the general aviation terminal.

Ziems was leaning on the rear of her car for support and police said they could smell alcohol on her breath. Her makeup also was running down her face and she was experiencing a range of emotions from "cooperative to combative to crying."

Police say she failed the sobriety tests, which officers videotaped.
