'Christmas at Palm Cottage' offers a trip back in time

The lavishly decorated doors of Palm Cottage at 137 12th Ave. S., just one block east of Naples Pier, are thrown open to the public at this time of year when the Collier County Historical Society presents "Christmas at Palm Cottage."

Holiday spirit reigns inside and out, and tours are available from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m. daily now through Jan. 4 (except for Dec. 25, 31 and Jan. 1). However, it's wise to call ahead to confirm the schedule.

Admission is a $5 donation for adults, and $3 for children.

The cottage, circa 1895, is a pristine example of tabby mortar, a homemade cement made by burning seashells over a very hot fire, using a species of mangrove called buttonwood. It's furnished in the Victorian-era style and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Information: 261-8164.
