Motor Sports: Davidson Memorial spices weekend at Charlotte oval

The Charlotte County Speedway in Punta Gorda sure knows how to polish off the Thanksgiving weekend.

Saturday night's racing will be followed on Sunday by the annual Brian Davidson Memorial for the limited late models.

The Davidson event is a 150-lapper and it will begin at 2 p.m. The race will pull in the top limited lates from across the state, thanks in large part to a purse that will pay $5,000 to the winner and $300 to start.

The race honors the memory of Brian Davidson, the late son of Charlotte County Speedway owner/promoter LeRoy Davidson. The inaugural Davidson Memorial was back in 1991.

Qualifying for the race will take place Saturday night, which also will be the final points night of the 2003 season for the regular divisions at 3/8-mile, paved oval.

There will be open practice for limited late models from 5-9:30 tonight.

Admission Saturday is $9 for adults and admission Sunday is $15.

The Charlotte County Speedway is located off Exit 161 of I-75 on Piper Road in Punta Gorda, just south of the Charlotte County Airport.

As for the points racing, drivers and their crews have been toiling every Saturday night since March in pursuit of a championship. While the titles have been decided in a number of the divisions, four of them are still up for grabs: sportsman, road warrior and the two 4-cylinder divisions.

The front gates Saturday will open at 4 p.m. and racing will begin at 7 p.m.

Other divisions racing Saturday night will be super stock and Thunder Trucks. The winners in those divisions have been decided, but positions farther back are still in question.

Doty duo steals show at drag strip

Larry Doty and his son, Ethan, have been long-time racers at the Immokalee Regional Raceway drag strip. So it was only fitting that this past weekend, the two won their respective classes on the same night.

This past weekend's drag racing started with the Fast Friday Shootout, in which, Darrell Beller of DLB Motorsports of Cape Coral took home top honors.

Saturday night brought about more doorslammer action as well as a regular bracket race.

In the "King of the Streets" final round, Lawrence Berry of Miami topped Caesar DiRenzo of Hollywood. Berry got the win when DiRenzo had mechanical problems off the line.

In the Combo class finale, Allen Abess of Fort Lauderdale won over Spencer Allen of Cape Coral when Allen left the starting line too soon, turning on the red light.

The Sportsman class final had Margate's Larry Doty winning over Naples' Tom VanTol when VanTol departed the starting line too soon.

In the Junior Dragster finale, Ethan Doty topped John Roy of Fort Lauderdale by running a 11.98 ET on a 11.79 dial with a .545 RT. Roy, meanwhile, broke out of his bracket, posting a 7.944 ET on a 7.95 dial with a near-perfect .503 RT.

This Saturday night there will be more doorslammer action and another regular bracket race.
