So what does Barron Collier sprinter Matt Clements do for an encore after setting a new school record in the 400-meter dash Friday night?
Set another one in winning a first-place golden baton in the event Saturday afternoon.
Clements eclipsed his short-lived school record in winning the 400 in an even 49 seconds at the Cougar Challenge at Barron Collier, helping the Cougars to the boys team title. Cape Coral was runner-up for the boys, just three points behind Barron. In the girls competition, Fort Myers took the team title by one point over Barron Collier.
Clements cruised to the top qualifying time in the 400 on Friday, knocking a half-second off the record previously held by Barron assistant coach Christian Bice. He was the favorite Saturday, but that wasn't enough to keep the butterflies from fluttering.
"I was really nervous for that race for some reason," Clements said of Saturday's final. "I was more nervous than I'd ever been in my life."
He finally calmed down after taking a commanding lead into the curve and hearing his father's voice among the crowd.
"He said, 'Last 200. Make it yours,' " Clements said. "So I just started picking it up."
While Clements easily won the 400, it took a furious finish from Estero's Bona Jones to win the 800-meter run, her third individual win of the meet. Jones had stiff competition from St. John Neumann's Ali Gardino from start to finish. The two ran shoulder to shoulder down the home stretch before Jones finally nipped her at the end by nine-hundredths of a second.
"It was rough," Jones said. "I wasn't ready for it. When she passed me in the second lap, I decided to sit back and get some energy saved up so I could get a good kick in at the end."
That 800 win came on top of scorching wins in the 3,200-meter run on Friday and the 1,600-meter run on Saturday.
Gulf Coast sprinter K.C. Cruz pulled out a close win of his own in the 100-meter dash. Cruz struggled out of the blocks, yet came on strong at the end. Cruz sprinted the straightaway in pursuit of Cypress Lake's Tyson Butler and Naples' Colbert Aimee, and dipped his head at the finish to edge out Aimee.
Cruz was happy with the win, but acknowledged that he must work on his starts to get better.
"I don't top out until I'm 70 meters down the track," Cruz said. "Everyone else is topping out at 40 or 50 meters, but I'm not doing it until late.
"I'd rather start fast and stay ahead," Cruz added. "But it doesn't work like that for some reason."
