Immokalee's Hall soars to another state high jump title

— As Immokalee high jumper Lou’Tisha Hall rolled off the mat after her final attempt, the spring remained in her long legs. She bounded bounded away from the pit, her long hair flying in the breeze and a smile on her face.

Gold feels good.

Hall won her second state high jump title in three years at Saturday’s FHSAA Class 2A Track and Field Championships at Wolfson High School. Her gold medal was the best of large medal haul by Collier County athletes.

On top of Hall’s gold in the high jump, she also placed second in the 300-meter hurdlers and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. Alex Jeanty also won a silver in the boys 800-meter run.

Immokalee’s Joanne Pierre kicked hard at the end to finish third in the 1,600-meter run and sixth in the 3,200-meter run, while Indians boys Nesly Saintervil tied for fourth in the 110 hurdles and Fan Fan Charles finished eighth. The Immokalee boys 4x100-meter relay team also made the medal stand, finishing eighth, and the boys 4x400-meter relay team finished fifth.

Golden Gate and Palmetto Ridge won the first state track medals in their two-year histories. The Titans picked up two, with Deon Gary finishing third the triple jump, Asha Tavernier tying for eighth in the high jump and the girls 4x400-meter relay team finishing seventh. Palmetto Ridge’s Cody Odgen finished eighth in the discus.

FSU High won the girls team title, with Immokalee finishing sixth. Tallahassee-Godby won the boys team title, with Immokalee finishing eighth.

Hall captured a state high jump title as a freshman, but fell to a tie for sixth as a sophomore, as jumping and running hurdle preliminaries took her out of her game. Timing was on Hall’s side this year. She cleared her winning height of 5 feet, 6 inches before she had to take the track.

Pope John Paul II High’s Dina Emde also cleared 5-6, but needed two attempts to Hall’s one.

“I knew I could clear it,” Hall said. “Once I cleared 5-6 without missing, I knew I was getting to where I needed to be, so that was good.”

Her early success kept her mind focused and calm for the evening and two top-four hurdle finishes with a silver medal.

Jeanty and Pierre used opposing strategies in their races. Jeanty went out fast in the 800, intent on staying with race leader Joseph Franklin of Godby. When Franklin kicked, Jeanty couldn’t follow, but winning silver wasn’t that bad.

“It’s nice, but I wanted the gold,” Jeanty said. “I had the confidence I could do it. My legs got tired and tight, so I stayed behind.”
