NCH Healthcare System officials are hopeful all operating rooms at North Collier Hospital can be brought back into service Wednesday morning after state officials made an emergency shut down this past weekend.

At issue was drywall damage that had to be repaired in a new operating room being built at on the back end of the hospital and having to clear out construction dust as well as having the three existing operating rooms cleaned and sterilized, said Gail Dolan, vice president of outpatient and ambulatory services.

"All elective surgeries are being diverted until Wednesday morning," she said. "Cases we were going to do today or tomorrow we are pushing back to the latter part of the week."

A total of nine elective surgeries, all gynecological related, were canceled for today and Tuesday, she said. No elective surgeries had been scheduled this past weekend.

The Birth Place is not impacted and so deliveries are still happening, she said.

One of three operating rooms is available for emergency surgery if necessary and a minor emergency surgery did occur this morning, she said.

At issue was a roof leak a few weeks ago and water damaged the wall between the existing area of the building and the addition for the new operating room.

"It was new construction but the old part of the roof," she said. "It happened inside the brand new operating room four at the end of the hallway."

Inspectors with the state Agency for Healthcare Administration spotted the damaged drywall in the new operating room, yet to be used, when they were at the hospital Thursday afternoon for a routine inspection.

"They saw a wall that had to be repaired," she said.

Inspectors with the state agency returned Friday evening and ordered the shut down of the operating rooms. They came back again Saturday morning, she said.

So far there has been no impact to Naples Community Hospital.
