Historic Hubbard Street Dance Chicago group comes to Naples

Dance springs from the soul as an expression of many things — emotion, thought, expression and personality. One company takes all of these things, combines cutting-edge choreography, virtuoso dancers, and a repertoire pulled from a long history of dance movements to create a masterpiece on stage.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will take the stage at the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6. Under the direction of Jim Vincent, the company has toured throughout the nation and the world.

The famed company began more than 25 years ago as a small studio on Hubbard Street, run by Lou Conte. Conte grew the company from three dancers to one of the most successful companies in the world.

Although he combined all types of dance into the company's repertoire, Conte is best known for his signature work The 40s. He retired as artistic director in 2000, but continues to work with the company and to run Lou Conte Dance Studio.

Conte will teach the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Modern Dance Series in Naples. The series of three will run at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24 and at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 16.

His workshops will bring his knowledge of the history of American dance, to the public. He will also share stories of Hubbard Street from its humble beginning to its worldwide fame.

The series is $105.

For those who would rather dance into the action, the Hubbard Street dancers will offer a Master Class at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6. Class size is limited and reservations can be made at 254-2640. The cost is $15.
