Library Friends host book sale
The Friends of the Bonita Springs Library will hold a mini book sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 11, outside the entrance to the library, weather permitting. A second sale will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 25.

The Christian Chamber of Southwest Florida will host its fourth annual Business Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers.
Garden Club visits Koreshan site
The Gulf Coast Garden Club will visit the Koreshan Historic Site at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13. Members, spouses and guests will have a special tour of the fascinating horticulture and history there. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy afterwards along the beautiful Estero River. There is a small fee to enter the park and for the tour. Bonita Fire board meeting scheduled
The Bonita Springs Fire and Rescue District will hold a regular board meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13. The meeting is open to the public and there are question and answer sessions during the meeting. The agenda will include discussion and voting on whether to hold future meetings at Bonita City Hall and for those meetings to be televised, and the public is invited to express their feelings in this matter. Estero Historical Society hosts speaker
Cultural Heritage Tourism Consultant Alan C. Pape will give a talk with slides at the next meeting of the Estero Historical Society at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The location will be the South County Regional Library on Three Oaks Parkway just north of Corkscrew Road. His topic will be "The Seven Basic Wants of a Visitor to a Historic Place," and his slides will provide examples of what other places have done to attract visitors to historic destinations. Learn to keep a Florida yard
There will be a Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Class from 9 a.m. to noon on Feb. 17. Attendees will learn the nine principles to having a Florida friendly yard, including cultivating hurricane resistant trees and plants as well as proper maintenance, efficient irrigation, mulching and techniques to save you money. There will be an optional landscape tour from 1-3 p.m. The cost for the class is $5, and the class will take place at Rutenburg Park in South Fort Myers one block east of McGregor Boulevard between College Parkway and Cypress Lake Drive. Bonita fire holds CPR classes
A CPR course for the general public will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 at Bonita Fire Department. The course will prepare students to perform CPR on adults, children and infants and covers access to the EMS system, recognition of a heart attack and stroke, rescue breathing and treatment for choking. Students will receive a course completion card. The deadline to register for this course is 4 p.m. Feb. 15. The class takes place at 27490 Old 41 Road in Bonita Springs. Free cello concert at South County Library
The Aria Celli, composed of cellists Julie Cornwall and Eugene Eicher, will play a free concert at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the South County Regional Library. PSU Alumni holds golf tournament

Zonta Club announces speaker
The Zonta Club of Bonita Springs will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the new Bonita Springs Board of Realtors building in the Bernwood Commerce Center on the north end of Old 41 Road. The speaker for the meeting will be Pete Mootz for the Renaissance Group of Bonita. He will discuss the different projects and accomplishments of the organization.
The Zonta Club is asking members and guests to donate items for laundry rooms such as laundry baskets, laundry soap, mops, etc. for the new homeowners for affordable housing in Rosemary Park. New programs at Bonita library
The Bonita Springs Public Library will host a discussion on the archeology of Bonita Springs at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21. John Beriault of the Southwest Florida Archaeological Society and the Archaeological and Historical Conservancy will be speaking.
The library will also host book discussion on Lee Standiford's "Bone Key" at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. The novel takes readers to Key West and relives days of old with new thrills. Preregistration is required for both programs. For more information and registration, call 479-4636.
Offshore fishing at West Marine
Capt. Brent Swenson will teach local anglers the finer points of offshore fishing at a free seminar at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. The seminar will feature techniques for catching fish geared toward local conditions. Swenson has been fishing in Bonita Springs since 1990 after years of experience in the Coast Guard and fishing as a captain from Key West through Central America. The seminar will take place at the West Marine store on U.S. 41 across from the Devoe Auto Dealership. Reservations are appreciated and can be made by calling 947-7666.
Chocolate classes at Lush
Lush Chocolates, formerly Killer Fudge, will be offering Chocolate 101 classes beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 23 and March 16. Students will learn how chocolate goes from bean to bar, and taste more than 10 chocolates from around the world. The cost is $10 and space is limited. In addition, the store is offering a free "Chocolate Challenge from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday through March 29. The challenge will ask participants to taste the difference between a real chocolate and a chocolate compound. The store is located inside Royal Scoop ice cream at 15 8th Street in Bonita Springs. Bonita Men's Club hosts guest speaker
The Bonita Springs' Men's Club will meet at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Elks Lodge on Coconut Road in Estero. The guest speaker for the meeting will be Wally Hay from the IRS. The Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce will host the workshop "Hiring Practices and Recruiting" from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the chamber offices. Learn to prevent identity theft
The public is invited to a free program on how to avoid identity theft and Internet fraud at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 in Edison Hall at Cypress Cove in South Fort Myers. Step up, Florida! comes to Lee County
The annual statewide relay, "Step up, Florida!" will head across Lee County on Feb. 8 and 9. The annual relay is designed to promote health and fitness for Florida residents. Residents can join the relay at a variety of locations, including Lovers Key State Park, Three Oaks Community Park and many more, and participants can run, walk or kayak part of the relay. Famed photographer visits Naples
The Conservancy of Southwest Florida will host an evening with National Geographic Photographer Mattias Klum at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8. Klum will speak on the passion of seeing wildlife, and is well-known for his daredevil trips to find rare, endangered or hard-to-reach species in the wild. The event will take place at Gulf Coast High School at 7878 Shark Way in Naples. The program is $35 for non-members, $25 for members and $10 for students. Shots for Tots given at First Presby
The Bonita Springs Shots for Tots program offers free immunizations for all children from infants to 18 years. Shots will be administered from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the First Presbyterian Church at 9751 Bonita Beach Road. The program, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bonita Springs in cooperation with the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs and the Lee County Health Department, is held from 6 to 8 p.m. first Tuesday and from 9 to 11 a.m. the second Thursday of every month at the church.

Bonita library hosts discovery programs
The Bonita Springs Public Library will offer a program "Remembering Radio with Bill Belany" at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8. Participants will listen to and discuss radio programs and commercials from the 1930s, '40s and '50s, including "The Shadow," "Fibber McGee" and more.

Rotarians get together for lunch

Guided kayak nature tours slated
The Ostego Bay Foundation kayak tour takes place from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays. First see the marine sciences facility and then take a guided paddle on the Great Calusa Blueway. Cost is $45 per person.
Take a Sunset Kayak Tour beginning at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10. The tour will be in Estero Bay near Lovers Key State Park. The two-hour tour costs $40 a person.
Beginning at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, take a Full Moon Kayak Tour. Enjoy the mysteries of the evening as day turns to dusk on the waters of Estero Bay near Lover's Key State Park. See the gorgeous sunset and then the moonrise. See the day birds feeding and then go to roost. The night birds become active, feeding, wading and flying. The two-hour tour is $40 per person.

Estero community meetings scheduled

Shellers focus on show prep
Bonita Springs Shell Club members will not hold a crafts session on Thursday, Feb. 9, in order to allow committee members to set up for the club's annual Shell Show, scheduled for Feb. 10 through Feb. 12 in the community room of building 2 at the Bonita Beach and Tennis Club, Bonita Beach Road. Shell floral arrangements, jewelry, critters and many other items will be sold at the show. Financial classes held in Bonita
The Bonita Springs Financial Class meet once every month during the season. Scheduled topics include the state of the economy, analysis of the financial markets, asset allocation and stock and mutual fund investing. The next class meets from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Feb. 10, and will include guest speakers from the Florida Department of Financial Services. Led by seasoned instructor Keith Moored, the course is open to the public, and is designed for all levels of investors. Village Band accepting scholarship applications
The Bonita Village Band will award three $1,000 scholarships to elementary and middle school musicians for the 2006-07 school year. Kay Batten's Ballroom Dance will begin its second session from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 17 through March 23 for beginners with advanced variation. The Semi-Retired Treasures Thrift Store is open for business and is well-stocked with items donated during the season, and there is currently a sale on all large appliances, such as refrigerators and stoves. In addition, the store carries clothing for children and adults, books, lamps, pictures and more. For those who wish to donate, the store will pick up and deliver heavy merchandise. Village Band offers free music
The Bonita Village Band will offer a free concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at St. Mary's Church, adjacent to the Presbyterian church on Bonita Beach Road. The concert is free and open to the public and will feature a violin solo by one of the band's scholarship recipients. The Bonita Village Band's music is patterned after the famous "mummers" style developed in Philadelphia and will feature a nine-man banjo section -the largest in Southwest Florida. High stakes poker for charity
The Harry Chapin Food Bank will host a high stakes poker tournament on Feb. 18 and 19. Phil Gordon, professional poker player and co-host of televisions Celebrity Poker Showdown, will be on-hand for an intensive tutorial poker seminar from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point. Estero offers CPR classes
Estero Fire and Rescue offers CPR and first aid courses to the community from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 18 at the Estero United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Classes teach students how to access the EMS system, recognize signs of a stroke, angina, heart attack and cardiac arrest, and how to perform CPR for adults, children and infants, as well as basic first aid for medical emergencies. Courses meet the requirements set by the Florida Department of Children and Family Services and the American Heart Association. Basketeers offer classes
The Summerville Basketeers will hold classes every Wednesday at 1 p.m. The next class is Wednesday, Feb. 8. Attendees will learn to make baskets and other items with pine needles, palm fronds and blossoms, and should bring those materials, along with a darning needle, to the classes. Girlfriends Unltd. needs volunteers
The Friends of the Salvation Army Bonita/Estero Auxiliary is adding a new volunteer group to their ranks, Girlfriends Unlimited. Meetings are Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. through May, and the next meeting is Feb. 8. The group is designed to help mothers of preschool-age children to experience fun, friendship and connection with their neighbors. Weekly activities will take place at locations such as the YMCA, the Literacy Council and the Bonita Springs' Art League. Bonita Fire teaches safe babysitting
The Bonita Springs Fire Department will hold a Safe Babysitting Class from 8:30 to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 11. The course is designed for children from ages 10 to 15, and focuses on household safety, general first aid and safety systems. Students will also learn child and infant CPR. Take a ghost walk in Koreshan park
Take a ghost walk in Koreshan State Historic Site at 7, 7:15, 7:30 or 7:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11. Tickets are $10 per person and reservations are required. By the light of the full moon, re-enactors will bring the historic Koreshan Settlement alive and take visitors back to the turn-of-the-century by presenting interactions that took place between the early Koreshans. Take tour of historic Koreshan site
The Koreshan State Historic Site off Corkscrew Road at U.S. 41 offers ranger-guided walks at 10 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Eleven of the original buildings are preserved. A botanical tour is conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesdays. Cost is $2 for adults and $1 for children under 12 plus park entry fee.
The Koreshan site is the former home of late 19th century pioneers whose founder Dr. Cyrus Teed's beliefs included the equality of men and women, celibacy and communal living. In 1893, the Koreshans began the settlement where they generated their own electricity, had a boat works, general store and other businesses. Children's program at Lover's Key
Lovers Key State Park will offer a Junior Ranger Program every day for children ages five and older to learn more about nature. The program covers three areas of the park can be done in a single day or over several days. Children should wear good walking shoes and bring a pencil. The Lovers Key/Carl E. Johnson State Park offers two-hour guided kayak tours beginning at 10 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The cost is $35 a person and includes kayak rental. Reservations are required.

Faith in Action seeks volunteers
Faith in Action, a non-profit agency serving the needy elderly of Bonita Springs and North Naples, has a shortage of volunteers to help drive elderly individuals to medical appointments as many regular volunteers are out of town. The American Red Cross is able to meet the needs of disaster victims through its cadre of Red Cross volunteers, people from all walks of life who are as diverse as the community. Consider donating some time to help others. The commitment can range from as little as a few hours of training and working with disaster victims on a regular basis to being available when a large disaster strikes. Volunteers are needed to assist in hurricane shelters, to work with families, to prepare and serve food and to assess damage. Red Cross volunteer opportunities are open to everyone. The Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce has its new Bonita Springs map ready for purchase. This map is the most up-to-date one of the area; an extensive review was undertaken to ensure the map's accuracy and completeness. The Humane Society of Lee County needs volunteers to assist with its Pet Therapy Program that involves volunteers taking pets to nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other places that need or want the companionship of animals for therapeutic reasons.
