Former Florida Gulf Coast University golfers Chris Trout of Cape Coral and Justin McCarraher of Fort Myers were among 10 qualifiers for the 44th annual Beck's Open at Fort Myers Country Club on Tuesday.
Shawn Matthews won the qualifier with a 5-under-par 66, followed by Billy Perry with a 67. Trout shot a 68 to finish third, and McCarraher's 70 placed him in a three-way tie for fifth. Mark Fogg had a 69 and was fourth.
Other qualifiers: Tim Duignan (70), Boo Blakeman (70), Sean Clark (71), Dan Augustine (71), and Denton Walker (71). Former Champions Tour player Bob Ralston is first alternate and Dennis Reidel is second alternate.
The $31,000 tournament is Saturday and Sunday at Fort Myers Country Club. Admission is free.
There are 48 pros and 144 amateurs in the field. The pro-am party is tonight at Fort Myers Country Club, with practice rounds scheduled for Friday. The pro-am Saturday is one best ball of four. On Sunday, the professionals will tee off between approximately 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
