Eagles drop in rankings despite easy wins

Despite netting three routs, the women’s basketball team of Florida Gulf Coast University dropped a notch to No. 13 in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, which was released Wednesday.

After attaining its highest-ever ranking of No. 12, FGCU (23-1) won at North Alabama, 83-57, on Feb. 1, shot down Palm Beach Atlantic, 82-45, on Saturday and raced past Florida Memorial, 70-27, on Monday.

The Eagles are off until Feb. 17, when they travel to Palm Beach Atlantic for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

-- EAGLE HONORS: Ebonie Halliburton, a senior criminal justice major, was named to the 2006 CoSida District III All-Academic third team on Wednesday. Halliburton averages 9.7 points per game and has a team-high 96 assists.

-- BASEBALL TEAM RANKED 21ST: The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team moved up four spots to No. 21 in the first regular- season NCAA Division II national poll released by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Wednesday.

The Eagles will face No. 5 Georgia College & State on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the first of three games at the Valdosta State Classic this weekend. They will face Valdosta State on Saturday and Eckerd on Sunday during the classic.

FGCU (4-0) was No. 25 in the preseason poll. The Eagles return home on Feb. 15 to host South Region opponent Barry at 7 p.m.
