Letter of the Day: Canal decision

Congratulations to the 60 residents along the Luke Street finger canals who voted to take personal responsibility to pay for the cleaning of their garbage-clogged canals.

This is the kind of voluntary civic action that makes me proud to be an American. The less we ask government to do for us, the lower our taxes will be, and doing more for ourselves strengthens our institutions of family, community, charitable and volunteer organizations.

The taxpayers of Bonita Springs thank you and we hope your actions will send a message to those few property owners along Old 41 who want all the taxpayers of Bonita Springs to foot the bill for their community redevelopment district. We hope they will reconsider their action and take personal responsibility for a project from which they have the most to gain.

Patrick McCourt/Candidate for Bonita City Council, District 3
