North Fort Myers woman charged with illegally cashing checks

A North Fort Myers woman has been arrested after investigators said she cashed checks she stole from a Bonita Springs ranch owner.

Bonita Tyerar Clifton, 47, of 8249 Hart Drive, was charged last week with illegally cashing four checks totaling $3,300. The checks were taken from Bonita Springs resident Kerry Van Meter.

According to Lee County Sheriff’s reports, Clifton looked over horses on Van Meter’s Broken Gate Ranch for two weeks last December. While on the Cutting Horse Lane ranch, reports say she went into Van Meter’s checkbook and removed four checks, which she later cashed. The checks were for $900, $600, $800 and $1,000.

Clifton was arrested Feb. 1. She was charged with four counts each of larceny, forgery and fraud. She was released three days later on a $10,000 bond. She has a March 6 court date.
