Southbound I-75 reopens in Collier after semi accident

Motorists in northern Collier County faced gridlock this morning as southbound lanes of Interstate 75 closed during the height of the morning rush.

A tractor-trailer overturned at about 5:40 a.m. on I-75 at the Vanderbilt Beach Road overpass. The crash blocked both southbound lanes, forcing authorities to close southbound I-75 between Immokalee Road and Pine Ridge Road.

Southbound traffic was urged to use Livingston Road or Airport-Pulling Road, then re-enter I-75 at the Pine Ridge Road interchange. The southbound lanes reopened at about 9:15 a.m.

Northbound traffic crawled as motorists slowed to look at the accident, highway patrol Lt. John Tower said. The highway patrol said northbound traffic at times was backed up to the Pine Ridge Road interchange.

A fuel leak on the overturned semi and several minor vehicle accidents related to the slow-moving traffic also were reported.
