Apopka man dies when SUV strikes tree

An Apopka man died in rural south Lee County on Wednesday night after losing control of the SUV he was driving.

Joel Anthony Pinzon, 19, a sophomore theater major at FGCU, was killed at 9:30 p.m. when his 2000 Chevrolet Blazer struck a tree off Corkscrew Road about seven miles east of Wildcat Run Road.

According to Florida Highway Patrol reports, Pinzon was traveling west on Corkscrew when he lost control of the SUV while navigating a curve. Pinzon’s car drifted onto the north shoulder, and he over-corrected while attempting to get back in his lane.

The car went off the road and overturned before striking a tree, said FHP Lt. Darren Sapp. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Pinzon was wearing a seatbelt, according to reports.
