Bonita woman a finalist for Lee civic honor

Bonita Springs resident Hellen Kralj is a finalist for the Paulette Burton award, Lee County's highest civic honor.

Kralj is a VOICE volunteer for the Lee County sheriff's office, and was nominated by Sgt. Dede Cook. She gave more than 1,000 hours of her time during 2005, and headed the VOICE Adopt a Family Christmas Parade and Program.

Also selected as finalists for the award are Anne Dalton of Fort Myers, Steve Maxwell of Sanibel and Nola Theiss of Sanibel.

The award is named for the late Paulette Burton, a government gadfly from Sanibel who died in a 1991 traffic crash. Commissioners created the award in her honor that very year.

In 2005 the award was won by Bonita resident David Graham, a Bonita Bay Group executive with a reputation for responsible development and community involvement. Graham died of cancer in October.

The 2006 award winner will be announced at the county commission meeting on Feb. 21.
