Don’t let high fees interfere

High schools across the state try to prepare their students for life after senior year. From guidance counselors to assistance with scholarships, students have a wonderful palette of opportunity that is available for the taking.

The palette expanded this past week with migrant students invited to Florida Gulf Coast University, as part of a project to help such students continue their education after high school.

With FGCU one of six state universities to accept undocumented students, opportunities abound — even though such students must pay a premium for their education. Put Edison College into the mix and there are numerous ways for migrant students to advance themselves.

Migrant students are defined as those students whose parents have moved within the past three years to pursue agricultural work. These students are deemed at risk for dropping out and finding a way into college.

Education has traditionally been a way to break out and advance in society. It is good to note that local educators are lending a hand to students who can excel in a university environment and break free of social and cultural shackles.

Education is the cure for so many ills. It derails cycles of poverty. It opens doors. The sky is the limit. Yet, it requires knowing of the opportunities, then making the effort.

Now, let’s make sure that such students are not further hampered by too-high educational costs from paying “out of state” tuition fees.
