Naples Zoo gets $200,000 gift

The nonprofit Trust for Public Land today donated $200,000 to the Naples Zoo to help with recovery from Hurricane Wilma.

The gift launches the second phase of a ReNew the Zoo campaign. Most of the money will be spent on a new, state-of-the-art habitat for leopards. Since the hurricane destroyed their exhibit nearly four months ago, the big cats haven't been on display.

The zoo, now a nonprofit, hopes to raise $650,000 in the second phase of its campaign. With that money, it plans to build two more exhibits. One will support American black bears, which have never before been seen at the Naples Zoo.

The zoo hopes to acquire at least two bears for the new exhibit, which would include a waterfall, pool, rocks, a cave and glass windows for viewing the animals at play.
