Shell crafts: Club hosts show in Bonita Springs

The Bonita Springs Shell Club is keeping the craft alive with its annual fundraiser this weekend. Since its counterparts in Naples and Fort Myers have disbanded due to dwindling participation, the group is one of the last remaining groups in Southwest Florida.

Shell crafts — in the form of "floral" bouquets, jewelry and "critters" — will be on display and for sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Bonita Beach and Tennis Club (community room in building two), 5700 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs. Admission is free.

Founded in 1985, the club meets at 9 a.m. every Thursday at the Bonita Beach and Tennis Club. The club currently has 75 members; new shell collectors and crafters will be accepted beginning in March.

Dedicated to the study and promotion of conchology and shell crafts, the club gives proceeds from its shows to groups including the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum on Sanibel Island, The Ostego Bay Foundation, Conchologist Society of America, Citizens Association of Bonita Beach, Barefoot Beach Preserve Learning Center, Lovers Key/Carl Johnson State Recreation Area, Turtle Time, Inc. and Estero High School's marine biology class.
