Juan Gomez applied a pair of pins against his first two opponents, toppled a third, and chalked up a win via default in his fourth match en route to capturing the Above-145 -pound Division of the Hendry County Invitation Wrestling Tournament, Jan. 7, at Clewiston High School. Gomez’ stellar effort was rewarded with the ‘Outstanding Wrestler Award.’

“Juan wrestled extremely well all during the tournament, starting out with those two pins against opponents from Estero and Lehigh High Schools,” said Golden Gate wrestling coach Ed Munn, “Then he followed it up by a technical fall against his opponent from Key West 20 seconds into that next match.”

(A technical is when you defeat your opponent by 15 points.)

Gomez raised his individual record to 13-1, following a perfect 4-0 exhibition record at the Hendry Tourney which included no opponent scoring any points against him.

“Tommy Kleinmeyer was also 4-0 which included all pins,” Munn added. “Vikingston Dalien was 2-0 while Mitch Horn posted a 3-1 record,” Munn added.

“Unfortunately, our Titans team could only fill seven out of the required 14 weights, so team-wise, we could only win one out of four divisions while beating Glades Central High School, 42-18. But our kids did a great job!”
