Cremation lecture
Kathy Nielsen of the National Cremation Society will talk about cremation at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Clubhouse at Aston Gardens at Pelican Marsh, 4800 Aston Gardens Way, Naples. A light lunch will be served after the program. Reservations required. Information: 593-3744
Florida DA
The Florida chapter of Debtors Anonymous will meet from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
on July 15 at the Best Western Naples Plaza Hotel, 6400 Dudley Drive, Naples. A record- keeping workshop will take place from 1-3:30 p.m. $5. Information: 262-3837 or 455-5436
Scholarships
The following students were given $1,000 scholarships by the Suncoast for Kids Scholarship Foundation: Elaine S. Fritschie, Barron Collier High School; Megan Pace, Everglades City; Kylee Pitts, Golden Gate High School; Samantha Dahl, Gulf Coast High School; Blanca Soto, Immokalee High School; Yvonette Isme, Lely High School; Charles Miller, Naples High School; and Jessie Carcamo, Palmetto Ridge High School.
Teachers of the year
The Gulfstream Foundation, a charitable organization of the Gulfstream Homes, has awarded the following teachers a $2,500 Teacher of the Year award: Deborah Graham, fourth- and fifth-grade teacher at Avalon Elementary School, and Beth Brabant, a reading teacher at Corkscrew Middle School.
Achievements and accolades
- Taylor Averill Berry of Naples was named to the 2006 spring semester dean's list at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
- Joan Bilson, membership director of Quail Creek Country Club, hosted more than 85 membership directors, general managers and members of the Club Marketing Association of America.
- Mary Ann Cole, daughter of Pam and Terry Cole of Naples, was named to the 2006 spring semester dean's list at Florida State University. Cole is a 2004 graduate of Barron Collier High School.
- Joan J. Curley is the new president of the Naples Press Club. Curley was previously the vice president of administration.
She is an author of six children's books.
- Keith Roger Eloi of Naples graduated from Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Neb., on June 10.
- Naples artist Chris Erickson won a scholarship to participate in the Orvieto Drawing Marathon to be held July 9-21 in Orvieto, Italy.
• Harper Simpson, bioterroism planner for the Collier County Health Department, was awarded a Davis Productivity Award on June 23 in Miami. The award is given by the Florida Tax Watch organization; it rewards innovative government projects that save dollars and/or lives.
• Denise Szedelyi, a St. John Neumann High School English teacher, has been added to the National Honor Roll's Outstanding American Teachers list for 2005-06.
