Recognition Day

The Collier County Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed Saturday as Big Brothers Big Sisters Recognition Day in Collier County. A celebration with activities and food by Outback Restaurants will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Fleischmann Park, 1600 Fleischmann Blvd., Naples. Admission is free, but tickets are required. New meeting place

The Collier County Democratic Club now meets at the North Collier Regional Park, 15000 Livingston Road, Exhibit building A. The club meets at 6 p.m. the third Monday of the month. Jeff Lytle, editorial page editor of the Naples Daily News, will be the featured speaker on July 17. Information: 434-7754

Adoption partners

The Humane Society of Collier County has been selected as the full-time adoption partner of the new pet superstore, Petco, at 6424 Naples Blvd., Naples. The Humane Society will have a permanent cat room with viewing and adoption during store hours. Dogs will be available for viewing and adoption on Saturdays. Information: 643-1880, ext. 18

Art awards

The following were winners of awards from the Art League of Bonita Springs:

Regional Artist I exhibit: Philip Hilton, first place, “Gator-ade,” watercolor; Louisa McNeil, second place, “Ruins of Thebes,” mixed media; and Dena Shepherd, third place, “Origami Palms,” watercolor.

Birdhouse building contest: Visual/Artist category: Mirek Hoschl, first place; Geshay Associates, second place; and Lindsey Wollard and Ellen Pritts, third place. Functional category: Ellen Pritts, first place; and Helen Orr, second place.

Achievements and accolades

-- Phillips Davis of Mr. Handyman of Lee and Collier Counties is contributing eight hours of Mr. Handyman services to each gift bag for the presenters and nominees of the 2006 ESPY awards. Davis is also donating a tree to be planted in New Orleans in behalf of each recipient.

-- Alison Lugrin, daughter of Thomas and Debra Lugrin of Naples, has been named to the president’s honor roll for the 2006 spring semester at the University of Florida. Lugrin has a 4.0 GPA.

-- David Lugrin, son of Thomas and Debra Lugrin of Naples, has been named to the president’s honor roll for the 2006 spring semester at the University of Florida. Lugrin has a 4.0 GPA.

-- J. Jeffrey Rice, managing partner of Goldstein, Buckley, Cechman, Rice and Purtz, PA, has been named “Super Lawyer” by Law & Politics Magazine.

-- Lauren Verderamo, daughter of Alexis and Anthony Verderamo of Naples, has been named to the dean’s list at the University of South Florida.

Graduations

-- Kate Chatham Davis, daughter of Lisa and Orlin Davis of Naples, graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., on May 13. Davis was a member of the Student Activities Funding Committee, secretary of Chi Omega sorority and president of the Student Senate.

-- Ryan J. Joyce, son of Starr and Michael Joyce and grandson of Robert and Barbara Grimm and Sheila Joyce, all of Naples, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point on May 27. Joyce, a 2002 graduate of Gulf Coast High School, received a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He is now stationed at Fort Benning, Ga.

-- Vanessa Mejia of Naples graduated from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

-- Matthew Quicke of Bonita Springs graduated from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies.

-- Ethan A. Roberts of Naples graduated from Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., on May 20 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
