Barron Collier graduate Chris Resop is back up again with the Florida Marlins. And he found out in an uncustomary way.
Resop's father, Tom, said a girlfriend of one of the players called Resop on Sunday afternoon in Albuquerque and congratulated him on being called up. She told Resop she had just received a text message from the Marlins about his call-up.
Resop stayed with Triple-A Albuquerque for its game on Sunday.
"He packed his bags and went back to the game," Tom Resop said. "He didn't want to leave because every time they have a sweep at home, the owner of the Isotopes will take the whole team for a steak dinner."
The Isotopes ended up playing 17 innings, and lost to Iowa, 5-4. They used eight pitchers, but Resop could not be used since he was already technically on the Marlins' 25-man roster. His flight to South Florida was scheduled to arrive just hours before Florida's game with Washington on Monday night.
"He told me (Sunday) night that he's more excited about going up this time than his major league debut," Tom Resop said. "He said 'I feel like the Marlins really want me.' "
Resop had not allowed a run since being sent down for the second time this season back on July 4. He threw five innings and gave up one hit, lowering his Triple-A ERA from over 5.00 to 4.42. Tom Resop said his son had been throwing his two-seam fastball better.
"His two-seam is working now, so that's really a great 'out' pitch," he said.
Resop made the Marlins out of spring training, but was sent down after a week. He was called back up on June 24, then sent down 10 days later. Tom Resop said Yusmeiro Petit, a starter in Triple-A, was recalled because the Marlins had an upcoming doubleheader and didn't want to burn out their bullpen.
"It's kind of a roller-coaster ride for these players," Resop said. "You're up, you're down, you're up, you're down."
Going into Monday night's game, the 23-year-old Resop had a 3.38 ERA in eight innings at the major-league level. He had given up nine hits, walked four and struck out four.

The Marlins continue their homestand with two games against the Nationals tonight and Wednesday, then face Pittsburgh for four games.
Tom Resop said he plans to go to tonight's game, and then for the three weekend games with the Pirates. His daughter, Jacqui, will be in town and go with him. "She's my travel partner," Resop said.
