The high price of gasoline has me so stressed that I decided to look for ways to reduce my consumption — and my nervousness.
My first stop: Supreme Auto to check out a Vespa. The 50 CC model ($3,570) requires no special license and gets 100 miles to the gallon. Wow! With a top speed of 45 miles per hour — just right for errands and getting to work — this a tempting purchase. I loved all six colors, but red shouted my name. It makes me feel like Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday.” All I need is my Pucci scarf, and I’m ready to shout “Ciao!”
A bicycle would be more work for me, but at least I wouldn’t ever have to stop at a gas pump. It will go as fast as I can peddle and will certainly help my budget. At the Bike Route, Electra‘s Townie ($349.99 and up) really piqued my interest. Although the Townie looks like an old-fashioned cruiser of my childhood, its lightweight aluminum frame and forward pedaling make it fast. The lower seat lets you sit upright (better views, less back pain) and keep your feet flat on the ground (more stability). Available for men or women in a wide choice of colors, the bike can be accessorized with a basket for holding purchases and bells and lights for safety.
But the simplest — and cheapest — way to get around is to walk. Shoe Warehouse has a variety of walking shoes, but to me, Mephisto is No. 1, and SAS comes in a close second. I really liked Mephisto’s red patent sandal ($125), but they also carry closed shoes and slides. The wonderful construction will have you walking faster and further. SAS makes a black loafer ($149) with so much cushion you feel like you’re floating. Other styles and colors are available. Your feet will feel so good, you won’t mind going that extra mile.
