PONTE VEDRA BEACH — The Florida State Seminoles have won 12 of the last 14 ACC football titles, but the media at ACC Kickoff don't think their 13th will come this season.
The media's majority picked Miami as the preseason ACC favorite, taking 31 of the 65 votes cast. FSU was second with 23 votes, with Clemson and Virginia Tech following with five votes each and Georgia Tech earning one vote.
Miami coach Larry Coker said that, while others may be surprised that the Hurricanes were the conference favorite following a 40-3 Peach Bowl loss and a tumultuous offseason, he's not.
"That's what our expectations are," Coker said. "We expect to be picked high and we hope we can finish that way."
Florida State and Miami are the favorites to win their respective divisions. FSU earned 49 first place votes in the Atlantic Division, Clemson following with 13 and Boston College following with three. Miami picked up 52 first place votes in the Coastal Division, with Virginia Tech getting 10 and Georgia Tech getting three.
If the predictions hold true, the Hurricanes and Seminoles will both start and finish the ACC season against each other. FSU coach Bobby Bowden doesn't mind that.
"I hope we'll be able to play them twice," he said.
Georgia Tech's All-American wide receiver Calvin Johnson was the runaway choice for preseason player of the year, earning 50 votes. Miami quarterback Kyle Wright was second with five votes, while FSU quarterback Drew Weatherford earned four and FSU running back Lorenzo Booker earned one.
