Candidates forum

The League of Women Voters of Collier County will hold a televised forum for the candidates for the Collier County Commission and School Board at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 31, at the Collier County Government Center, 3301 U.S. 41 E., Naples.

Dog adoptions reduced

Lee County Animal Services is discounting the price of dog adoptions to $40 during the month of August. The adoption fee includes spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, rabies vaccination, Lee County dog license, heartworm test, flea treatment and a Microchip ID. Information: (239) 432-2083

Hurricane preparedness

Hurricane seminars will be held at the following Lee County libraries:

Driver safety classes

The following driver safety classes are offered by AARP:

-- 8:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Aug. 17 and Aug. 18, Merrill Gardens, 1710 S.W. Health Parkway, Naples

-- 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 22 and Aug. 23, Golden Gate Community Center, 4701 Golden Gate Parkway, Naples

-- 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 7 and Sept. 8, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 625 111th St., North Naples.

New officers

-- The American Business Women’s Association, Tropic Enlightenment Chapter, elected the following officers for 2006-2007:

Sandi Levens, president; Janet Broker, vice president; Marie Carbonero, recording secretary; Norma Pogel, treasurer; and Doris Mellon, corresponding secretary.

-- Naples Newcomers Club installed the following new board of directors for 2006-2007: Joan Peppe, president; Barbara Blattner, first vice president; Sarah DeFrancis, second vice president; Bessie Jarjoura, third vice president; Mariann Jensen, treasurer; Joan Wilson, publicity/corresponding secretary; Chris Miller, recording secretary; and Diane O’Neil and Jackie Timte, luncheon reservations.

-- Naples Art Association elected the following officers for 2006-2007: Fred Sonnenberg, president; Frank Nappo, first vice president; Ellin Goetz, second vice president; Ann Anspach, treasurer; Robert Saltarelli, secretary; Lynda Bulloch, Angela Chinaglia, Michael Fernanadez, Todd Gates, Mary Tanner Hackney, Mary Sehnert Smith, Richard Stevens, Melanie MacPhee-Wasmer and Jon Zoler, board members. Deb Chambers, Tom Ellis, Kim Johnson, William J. Meek III, Sam Platt, Jodi Rosenbaum and Penny Taylor are continuing as board members.

Scholarships

Voices of Naples has awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Lora Lee Gayer and Stephanie Christiano.

Gayer, daughter of Tom and Cindy Gayer of Naples, is a soprano. She recently graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Mich., and will be a freshmen at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in the fall.

Stephanie Christiano, daughter of Michael and Susan Christiano, is a mezzo-soprano and a senior at Cypress Lakes Center for the Arts in Fort Myers. She recently appeared in the Opera Naples production of “Tosca.”

Achievements and accolades

-- Gerry Ginsberg has been appointed the new executive director of the Edison Festival of Light.

-- Amanda C. Pogel, daughter of Jeffrey and Leah Pogel of Naples, received $1,200 from the American Business Women’s Association, Tropic Enlightenment Chapter. Pogel is a student at Florida Gulf Coast University.

-- Steve Roe of Naples was awarded the Agency Hands in the Community Award from the Allstate Foundation. Roe won the award for his commitment to volunteering for the Special Olympics. He received a $500 grant for the Special Olympics Florida.

-- Diana and Jerry Thirion have been named co-chairs for the David Lawrence Foundation’s signature fundraiser.

-- Amanda Woodward received a conceptual design award in a juried show for a poster she made using the Adobe Illustrator CS program. Woodward, a 2003 graduate of Lely High School, is a junior at the Ringling School of Art and Design.

Graduations

-- Mackenzie Kate Thomas, daughter of Kelly A. Thomas of Naples, graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in engineering on May 12, from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

-- Ronald L. Polston III, son of Judi Bautista of Naples, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

-- Jeffrey W. Wahlers Jr., son of Lisa Siedlecki and Jeff Wahlers, both of Naples, graduated from basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. Wahlers is a 2006 graduate of Palmetto Ridge High School.
