Chico's posts profit increase in May

Fort Myers-based Chico’s, a specialty clothing retailer, beat analyst expectations to post a 7.2 percent increase in same-store sales for the four-week period ending May 27 compared to the same time last year.

The gain comes after relatively low gains in April that cost Chico’s dearly in the stock market. But the clothing retailer recovered nicely beating analysts’ forecasts of an average 6.3 percent in gains, according to a poll by Thomson First Call.

The company also reported a 20.4 percent increase in sales for the month to $141.1 million from $117.1 million.

So far for the year, total sales are up 20 percent to $533 million from $444 million from the same period last year.

The company operates 802 women's specialty stores under the Chico's, White House Black market, Soma by Chico's and Fitigues Brand Names.
