Road construction to watch for in Lee

Road construction doesn’t stop for hurricane season.

Construction or not, on Lee County’s roads, it is always advised to plan for extra commuting time.

When a hurricane is bearing down, it may be wise to avoid construction areas. That scenario may not be very easy in south Lee County. One consolation, however, is when a hurricane threatens, construction projects will be shut down and all available lanes will be opened.

The following is a list of roads in South Lee County that could be under construction during hurricane season:

• Alico Road — The county is almost finished with its widening of Alico Road but the Florida Department of Transportation is still working on the Alico Road/Interstate 75 interchange. That project will continue through the summer as well as the state’s work on widening Alico to six lanes between Ben Hill Griffin Parkway and Three Oaks Parkway.

• U.S. 41 — According to the contractor’s recently updated schedule, the widening to six lanes of U.S. 41 in Bonita Springs should be complete by mid-June. However, the completion date has been pushed back several times.

• Three Oaks Parkway — Lee County will begin the widening and extension of Three Oaks Parkway this summer. The extension, which will connect the road to Imperial Street, should not cause any evacuation problems because it is a new road. However, the widening of north section of Three Oaks from Corkscrew Road to Alico Road could cause some delays.

• Summerlin Road — Lee County will widen Summerlin to six lanes between San Carlos Boulevard and Gladiolas.

• Alligator Alley — FDOT will resurface I-75 through Alligator Alley throughout the summer. However, if a hurricane threatens, work will seize and all lanes will be open.
