Hurricane seminar planned this month in Bonita

Lee County and Bonita Springs will host a mini-hurricane seminar for the public at 2 p.m. June 15 at the First Presbyterian Church on Bonita Beach Road.

The workshop comes as hurricane season started today and many government and emergency officials feel the public is largely unprepared for a big disaster.

Convincing people to have a proper hurricane supply kit and an emergency plan has been the most difficult thing for Lee County and Bonita Springs officials this season, said John Wilson, Lee County Public Safety director.

To get government agencies ready for a potential disaster, emergency officials have re-evaluated their communications, reaffirmed their response plans, gotten more generators in place and kept in touch with private aid organizations like the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.
