CODE RED: Marco Island residents are encouraged to register their home or cell phone numbers in the city's Code Red automated emergency update system. Once registered, residents will receive automatic updates by phone from city officials who will provide important, critical information prior to and after a storm event. To register, call City Hall or visit the city's Web site at www.cityofmarcoisland.com. Residents can register long-distance phone numbers or cell numbers from other area codes for updates at no charge from the city. Many residents evacuate the area and can still remain recipients of CODE RED updates if they provide available contact numbers, city Fire Chief Mike Murphy said.
MARCO power is provided by the Lee County Electrical Cooperative, based in Fort Myers. LCEC officials request residents to contact Marco City Hall for power updates. "Immediately after a hurricane, LCEC is aware of large power outages," public relations manager Nancy McCarthy said. "LCEC asks that customers keep our telephone lines open for emergencies." Marco officials are in constant contact with LCEC for updates on power outage repairs during storm events or other emergencies, McCarthy said. Otherwise, LCEC emergency numbers are (239) 656-2300 or 1-800-599-2356.
