Collier teachers voting on proposed contract

Collier County teachers are casting votes today on whether to support a tentative contract between teachers and the school district.

After ballot counting is completed, the results are expected to be released on Monday.

Both sides agreed that teachers would receive a 6 percent increase across the salary schedule for the 2006-2007 school year. But under the proposal, teachers this fall would have to remain at their current step, which is measured by years of experience.

With the proposed salary increases, a starting teacher would earn $38,198 a year. Teachers with 16 to 19 years of experience would earn $58,812.

Teachers casting ballots are part of the Collier County Education Association, the group that represents about 80 percent of the district’s teachers.
