Lee to weigh special needs designation

At their management and planning meeting Monday, Lee County commissioners will discuss designating the Karl J. Drews Community Center in San Carlos Park as a dedicated special needs facility.

The community center currently houses programs for all residents.

County officials plan to move the existing programs to the new community center that will be located at the new park on Williams Road in Estero.

San Carlos Park residents have lobbied commissioners to leave the existing programs at the center.

Commissioners will also discuss a name for the new Estero community park. Suggestions include Estero Community Park & Estero San Carlos Recreation Center, Oak Hill Community Park, BEST Community Park (Bonita, Estero, San Carlos and Three Oaks), Ostego Community Park, and Gustave Park.

The items are only for discussion. Any decisions the board makes will have to be approved in the weekly Board of County Commission meeting.

The management and planning committee meets at 1:30 p.m. in the county commission chambers.
