Letter: My experience

Re: Article on the “Kidney Connection” on May 22.

As a kidney donor to my brother 8½ years ago, I’d like John Stevens to reconsider the offers from his children to donate one of their kidneys to him.

The new method of harvesting a kidney allows the donor to be back on his/her feet in a much shorter time period than the old way, like I have done.

Laser treatment was too new in 1997, but I understand it is done routinely now, with only a small scar.

I have not had any problems or complications after my initial recovery from the surgery. (As far as I know, no donor has ever lost his/her life because of the transplant.)

My brother’s life is so much improved than if he would have had to stay on the dialysis he was on for two-plus years, and we believe it has extended his life span. It definitely gave him a better quality of life, and he is now enjoying his new granddaughter.

So, Mr. Stevens, I urge you to reconsider, and I’m sorry your brother didn’t opt for any kind of treatment.
