Youth: RipTide runner-up at Memorial Day tourney, gain nationals

The South Florida RipTide girls 13-and-under basketball team qualified for nationals over the Memorial Day weekend. The girls placed second in the tournament with a 4-1 record.

To get to the finals they faced quality teams from Tampa, Jupiter and Jacksonville. Their next tournament is the states this weekend, with nationals in July.

Members of the team are: Katie Arnold, Riki Carach, Rachel Carroll, Shiloh Galasso, Emily Kless, Kirsten Langdon, Cindy Lopez, Juliette Murillo, Aimee Osceola, Brittany Reid and Carliegh Watts.

To raise funds for nationals, the girls are hosting a golf tournament June 10 at Arrowhead Golf Course. Cost for a foursome is $300. If interested in donating money, call Tammy Langdon at 353-8441.

The Collier Select 13s baseball team captured the USSSA East Coast/West Coast Classic in Fort Myers the weekend of May 20 and qualified for the Elite 12.

The tournament hosted some of the top 13-and-under baseball teams from the East and West Coasts of Florida, with pool play beginning May 20. Teams from the East and West faced off against each other for the Sunday seeding.

Select split in pool play, beating the Pasadena Panthers and losing by one run to the all-star Miami Renegades. Select reached the semifinals by beating the South Florida Razorbacks, 5-3, then battled to the title game by beating Florida’s top-ranked Manasota Meteors, 5-4.

Select played the Southwest Florida Dirtbags in the championship game, which went past midnight. Select rallied to win the game in five innings, 10-2.

Select got strong pitching out of Bo Logan, Ryan Soper, Giannys Barrabi and Kyle Alvarez. The team also got key hits from Logan, David Del Giorno, Zach Santos and Darby McCormick, with Logan hitting a three-run homer.

Collier Select has a 49-14-1 record, winning three championships. With a busy 12-tournament schedule, Select also placed in the top three slots seven times, qualifying for the USSSA Elite 12 later this summer.

The Elite 12 consists of the top 12 teams in the state rated by Florida Travel Ball. Select is ranked top 10 in USSSA and AAU baseball.

The Naples Youth Baseball Club 12-and-under Mustangs team had a finished second in the USSSA East Coast/West Coast Classic baseball tournament, which was held at the Stars Complex in Fort Myers.

The Naples Mustangs beat the Miami Beach Sharks, 9-2, and the Homestead Vipers, 10-5, to advance to the title game, won by the Cape Coral Cannons, 5-4.

During the two-day event, the Mustang offense was sparked by Al Smith’s three home runs, and home runs by Drew Jackson and Leo Rill. Bryan Alonso and Marlon Gallo pitched well. The other Mustang players are, Domonic Blanco, Brandon Gomez, Sam Granoff, Jose Hernandez, Jordan Jackson, and Austin Peterson.

The Mustangs are preparing for the Hall of Fame tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y., this summer, where they will compete against 96 teams from around the U.S.

The Cape Coral Major Little League Bruins defeated the Naples Dynamites, 9-7, in extra innings to win the Top Team Classic softball tournament May 21 in Naples.

The Bruins won five games over the weekend to win the Classic, which featured 24 teams from three counties.

The Naples Hurricanes awarded $1,000 scholarships to Nicholas Caputo, Laura Roche and Kendra Packard.

This is the inaugural year for the Naples Hurricanes Scholarships. The requirements for the scholarship: the student must have participated or volunteered for the Naples Hurricanes for a minimum of three years and be a graduating high school senior going to college, along with maintaining a grade point average of a 3.0 or higher.

The Naples Titans will be holding signups for the upcoming tackle football and cheer season. The signups will be held at East Naples Middle School from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the month of June and from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays beginning this Saturday and then June 10, 17, 24 and July 1.
