Project H.O.P.E. offers program for children
The anxiety and fear generated by a hurricane is often far more intense and troubling for children. Unable to cope, they frequently revert to regressive behaviors like thumb sucking, bedwetting, and other similar manifestations. The importance of helping them to heal emotionally following a hurricane or major disaster has long been recognized. This is where Project H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People in Emergencies) steps in.
On Monday, June 5, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Vanderbilt Beach Branch Library will host a puppet show for children kindergarten age and older titled "Heroes of the Storm." The program is presented by Project H.O.P.E. and depicts how a group of friendly woodland animals prepares for and survives a hurricane. Following the puppet show, Project H.O.P.E. team members will allow children an opportunity to process and discuss their individual experiences, feelings, and any concerns they may have that are associated with hurricanes.
Registration is required for this program. Those wishing to attend may call 597-8444 or register in person at the Vanderbilt Beach Branch Library. The library is located at 788 Vanderbilt Beach Road in Naples.
Project H.O.P.E. is funded by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency through a Crisis Counseling Program grant administered by the Florida Department of Children & Families.
