Picayune State Forest fire 70 percent contained

Firefighters spent Sunday still battling flames at Picayune State Forest and prepared to enter day four of the firefight today.

Division of Forestry officials said the 1,200-acre fire off Sabal Palm Road in the forest began about 6 p.m. Friday. Officials think a lightning strike caused the fire.

The fire was never a threat to any homes, but it did consume one small building, thought to have been a shed, officials said.

Division of Forestry officials doused the fire throughout the weekend, using helicopters and an airplane.

As of Sunday evening, the fire was about 70 percent contained, officials said.
