As time passes, it is a date beginning to be assigned to ever deeper and more distant chapters in history books. We fear today's students are like those in the late 1920s getting tired of hearing about the Civil War.
Yet, D-Day is more than a date. It is a time tattooed on our national soul.
Today, we stand in remembrance of D-Day, the invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe in 1944. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower gave the order to attack Hitler's western border (the Atlantic Wall) and Allied forces paid the price when they landed on the shores of Normandy in France.
Rows and rows of crosses near Normandy's beaches now mark the graves of those who sacrificed so we can be free.
Today, we stand in remembrance of heroes. From soldiers who gave their lives on the beach heads, nicknamed Omaha, Utah, Juno, Gold and Sword, to those who fought for the next 10 months across Europe until the final defeat of the Nazis in April 1945, we can never repay the debt.
We ought to always remember that our freedom of speech and all other constitutional guarantees were paid in part by the blood of men who stormed the shores of Normandy.
The price was worth it. Thank you to those who paid.
